Video and Sound Site-specific Installation

Berry Brothers Bolt Works Factory
Columbus, OH
May 16, 2002

An interactive video and sound installation responding to the historical context of a 20,000 square foot floor of a 19th century bolt manufacturing facility. In one area of the installation, an array of bolt-making machines were juxtaposed with 22 hand-sized LCD screens displaying on side of the corridor a walking backward sequence and on the other side a video loop of freight trains passing by on the nearby tracks. The passage leads into the second area of the installation where four screens merge projections of a spinning bolt and a tide moving in on a shore. The video footage was controlled by real time manipulation software that varied the frame rate of the video playback by processing audio input, reacting to the occupancy of the room. The more active the viewers of the space, the faster the video playback. This created a ‘breathing space’ that intimately involved the viewer in exploring the temporal and spatial dimensions of the surroundings.
